Located in Clapham, this 1960s modernist home on New Park Road, originally designed by Michael Blackstock, has been given a contemporary revival through a thoughtful blend of technology and design. Instead of demolishing this historic property, RDA Architects led a sensitive restoration, transforming it with modern elements while preserving its architectural heritage. Collaborating with RDA Architects, Akarui developed a lighting scheme that met the client’s unique requirements and overcame structural limitations, including low ceilings and concrete frameworks.

On the ground floor, the former parking area is now a peaceful entryway featuring a private study, bedroom suite, utility room, and a serene Japanese-inspired garden. To adapt this entrance as a flexible gallery and workspace, MS Lighting Design installed soft, concealed lighting and a magnetic track system for versatile display lighting. This setup, controlled through Casambi smart technology, allows the client to alternate between standard use and exhibition lighting with ease.

The upper floors retain the home’s original features, including the perimeter pelmet design, enhanced with concealed white and RGB lighting to adjust ambiance. Integrated DMX control with sound-to-light functionality enables the client, a DJ, to synchronise lighting with music for entertaining. Practical downlighting serves as task lighting for the kitchen and living areas. Aligned with the pioneering Passivhaus standard, the renovation combines energy-efficient lighting and rigorous insulation, significantly reducing energy consumption and contributing to a sustainable future without compromising style.
