No1 Lounges

No1 Lounges, a premium collection of independent airport lounges across the UK, offers travellers a luxurious space to unwind before their flights. In 2017, No1 Lounges introduced their top-tier Clubrooms, designed to resemble modern members' clubs with exceptional service. However, aspects of the lounge design required refinement, leading to a redesign in 2018, starting with the Birmingham Clubroom.

To achieve the sophisticated, moody ambiance desired, Akarui was commissioned by architects and designers Inside Out. The brief emphasised reducing downlights to create softer, more elegant lighting levels. Akarui crafted a scheme to highlight key features of the space while enhancing its luxurious feel, working around technical constraints like limited ceiling height and a suspended, perforated ceiling that needed to remain accessible for airflow and fire regulations.

A custom fix was developed for egg crate spotlights, allowing flexible positioning while minimising visibility. Integrated lighting in custom joinery provides subtle, indirect illumination across surfaces, preserving the desired atmosphere. A scene-setting system automates lighting to suit different times of day and year, while electric blinds regulate daylight, preventing harsh direct sunlight from overwhelming the space. The result is a refined, sophisticated environment where travellers enjoy a relaxing, high-class experience, with lighting playing a central role in creating this exclusive, elegant atmosphere.
